toddler attention span: what's actually normal

"my toddler can't sit still for 5 minutes!" actually, that might be completely normal.

the numbers

here's what's developmentally normal for attention span:

  • 1 year old: 2-3 minutes
  • 2 years old: 4-6 minutes
  • 3 years old: 6-8 minutes
  • 4 years old: 8-12 minutes

if your 2-year-old can focus for 5 minutes on something, that's great. that's exactly where they should be.

but they watch cocomelon for 30 minutes?

here's the thing: that's not focus. that's a freeze response.

when content is overstimulating, toddlers don't "pay attention"—they zone out. their brain shuts down non-essential functions to cope with the sensory overload.

real attention looks different: they're engaged, responding, maybe pointing or talking. not glassy-eyed and motionless.

why this matters for screen time

if your toddler's natural attention span is 5 minutes, then:

  • a 5-minute calm video is age-appropriate
  • a 30-minute cocomelon binge is overwhelming their system
  • shorter, calmer content respects their brain
  • longer, stimulating content works against it

content that matches their brain

that's why we keep our videos short and paced for actual toddler attention spans. no filler. no stretching. just enough to engage without overwhelming.
